The Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Swim commemorates the 50th anniversary of the tragic sinking of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald and the loss of 29 lives.

In 2025, open water swimmers, recruited by Jim Dreyer, will participate in a 411-mile relay from where the shipwreck lies in Lake Superior to Detroit, the Edmund Fitzgerald's intended destination.  Passing between them iron ore pellets, these swimmers will make history by symbolically completing the big ship's route and cargo delivery, carrying on the legacy of the mariners who perished.

The Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Swim will be the subject of a documentary film and will raise funds to preserve the Whitefish Point Lighthouse, a most important beacon for safeguarding mariners along Lake Superior's "Shipwreck Coast."

The Mighty Mac Swim, founded and organized by Jim Dreyer, opened the Straits of Mackinac as an open water swimming destination.

The first Mighty Mac Swim was held in 2007 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mackinac Bridge and featured 50 pioneering swimmers crossing the often turbulent straits between Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas.  The event quickly grew into one of the world's most popular internationally sanctioned races and most successful fundraisers, with 400 participating annually.

The Mighty Mac Swim was discontinued with the onset of the pandemic following the 2019 swim.
